A. C. Vroman

Adam Clark Vroman was born in 1856 and lived in Pasadena, CA. He took up photography in 1892, and began annual trips to the Southwest to document the native people, landscape and architecture there. A dealer in rare books, Vroman made few prints of his images.

Of the 12 prints shown here on our site, all are original platinum prints made by Vroman from 6 x 8 glass negatives. All these prints are from 1899, from a single visit he made to New Mexico.

Each is numbered in the negative and titled by Vroman in ink beneath the image. These cannot be seen, as the mat covers them, but each print has been photocopied and attached to the back.

The quality of the prints is extraordinary, and they have been stored away for decades, unexposed to any light.
